Tata Motors is all set to expand its CNG lineup in India with the launch of the Altroz hatchback with iCNG technology. The Tata Altroz CNG will be the carmaker’s third CNG vehicle after launching the Tigor sedan and Tiago hatchback with the CNG kit last year. Tata Motors also showcased the CNG version of its smallest SUV Punch with the Altroz iCNG model at the Auto Expo earlier this year. When launched, the Tata Altroz CNG will take on rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG.
Tata Motors had announced that it will launch the Altroz iCNG tomorrow, 19th April. It will be available in the top variant with all the features offered in its standard variant. The biggest change on the outside will be the ICNG badging to differentiate it from its ICE avatar.
The biggest change will come in the boot space of the Altroz iCNG. Tata Motors will introduce its new twin-cylinder CNG technology in a hatchback for the first time in India. Tata showcased the technology during the Auto Expo. The Altroz CNG kit will come with a lower and flatter surface that will allow more luggage space at the rear. Tata Motors has also removed the spare wheel to accommodate two smaller CNG tanks with a capacity of 30 litres. This is different from conventional CNG vehicles like Tiago and Tigor, which come with large CNG cylinders inside the boot space and leave little space for luggage.
Under its hood, the Altroz CNG will continue to be powered with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that is also used in the Tiago and Tigor CNG models. Mated to a manual gearbox, this engine will be capable of producing 73 bhp and 95 Nm in ICNG mode. Without the CNG kit, the engine can generate 84.82 bhp power and 113 Nm peak torque. The fuel efficiency of the Altroz ICNG is expected to be around 27 km/kg, almost the same as the Tiago ICNG.
Tata Altroz CNG could be priced around 80,000 over the standard petrol variant of the hatchback that starts at Rs. 6.45 lakhs. Altroz iCNG prices are expected to start from approx. 7.50 lakhs and can go up to 10 lakh for the higher variants.
